Imposter Syndrome: Our Bane

How many times have we not questioned our skills, or our competencies when we found ourselves in an environment, such as the workplace, or schools among others, despite we might have been more qualified in such settings? That feeling is when you think you are like a square peg in a round hole even though you might have the necessary skills to be the best version of yourself in the environment you find yourself.

We often disqualify ourselves because we do not believe we fit in or are not qualified enough to work in such places. We think other people would see us as fraud and to protect our ego we fold in and become timid due to our inferiority complex. Most educational programmes do not prepare entry-level employees to deal with this ugly monster called imposter syndrome which does not live in any other place than in our minds. This syndrome can change your perspective about many things and make you think everyone is against you even when most people mean well and are willing to help you surmount that mountain of a monster called imposter syndrome. This can affect even the most experienced in their fields of discipline especially when they move jobs into an unknown environment.

No matter how we prepare ourselves to hedge against this syndrome, we should leave room for uncertainties so that when this monster raises its ugly head, we know we can at least live with it for a short while. Before you doubt yourself or think you're not good enough, remember why you were allowed to work there or attend that interview. There are good reasons they chose you! Therefore, go there make yourself proud and deliver, and do not give up!
